Flu season is here.  

Let’s not ignore Cold and Flu risks even though we are practicing high levels of hygiene to minimise the risk of exposure to Coronavirus. In fact, the pandemic gives us reason to place more importance on taking further Cold and Flu preventative measures. 

Doing the right thing saves businesses time and money in reduced sick leave, presenteeism and absenteeism.  

Kineo has partnered with the University of South Australia to create a Cold and Flu Prevention course. This course helps learners build their knowledge about the differences between the common Cold and the Flu virus to help them remain healthy through the cold season we are entering whereby infectious disease transmissions are at their highest. 

This course helps organisations as it is designed to reduce the number of sick days by encouraging workers to get the flu shot. If they are sick, to apply hygiene techniques that reduce the spread of infection, such as regularly washing your hands. This course is an ideal promotional piece for an organisations’ annual flu shot campaign.  

As we enter winter, our habits change and our risk of infection increases. When it’s cold, we tend to wrap up, stay inside with the heating turned up and the windows shut. With less sunlight and resulting vitamin D levels, this decreases our immunity to fight off viruses, making us more susceptible to contracting the influenza virus. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) states:

“Hospitalization and death occur mainly among high risk groups. Worldwide, these annual epidemics are estimated to result in about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness, and about 290 000 to 650 000 respiratory deaths.” 

Influenza/common cold misconceptions  

Often referred to as the same thing, they are not! People often talk about colds and flu yet the distinction needs to be made, they are different illnesses caused by different viruses.   
The common cold initially has similar symptoms to that of influenza, with a cough, sore throat, and a stuffy nose.  It tends to last three days. Flu symptoms also include fever, cold sweats, aches all over the body, headache, exhaustion, and possibly gastro-intestinal symptoms, depending on the severity of the dose of flu contracted. Flu can last anywhere between three and seven days.  Doctors advise patients to remain at home in those first couple of days, when the risk of contagion is highest. 

Adults are able to spread the virus one day prior to the appearance of symptoms and up to seven days after symptoms begin. Influenza is typically spread through coughs and sneezes of an infected person Infection may also be spread by contact with hands and contaminated tissues.  
What does prevention look like? 
Flu vaccinations also protect those that are vulnerable around us. The influenza vaccine should be taken annually as their effectiveness will last only a few short months. Practise good hygiene by washing your hands regularly, using hand sanitiser, coughing or sneezing into a tissue, or failing that, use your elbow (not your hand and here’s the science).  These techniques will help to stifle the reach of your particle burst.  

Our society is currently exercising social distancing (physically distancing from others outside of our immediate household circle) due to the aggressive spread of Covid-19.  The New York Times, in its Stay 6 Feet Apart article has explored the reasoning behind the prescribed measure of the distance between others. When in public we have been advised to be six feet apart. This is supposed to be a safe scientifically approved distance if someone nearby is infected with the Coronavirus and coughs or sneezes, spreading droplets that carry virus particles. 

Heightened measures for distancing from others in the Coronavirus pandemic  

Covid-19 scientists that are studying air flow are concerned about the lesser reported smaller particle droplets, known as aerosols. We can draw parallels to the spread of the common cold and Influenza in the Potential Implications for Reducing Transmission of Covid-19.  Here, scientists recommend that individuals take additional precautions for their own vulnerability, whether individuals are in an enclosed room or outside in an open space, when they consider if six feet is a sufficient distance.  

The image above depicts the multi-phase turbulent gas cloud from a human sneeze that reaches further than our current distancing practices where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a 6-foot (2-m) separation.  
Knowledge is power. Do the right thing to protect yourself and those more vulnerable around you.
