Shaping the future of learning

Managing an LMS can get complicated quick. Whether your company is implementing one for the first time, has migrated systems or is looking to give your current learning platform a new lease of life, there are a couple things you need to do in order for your LMS to thrive. And one of the best places to start is by providing your team with right foundation.

You've got an LMS, now what?

In order for your learning platform to stay fresh and engaging, it needs time and attention. A learning platform can, and will, become obsolete if it is ignored for too long. So with that in mind, here are the 6 things needed to successfully manage an LMS:

  1. Get a team together with the right skills

It might seem obvious, but whether you have a team of one or 10, you need someone looking after the system who knows all its ins and outs – and actually has the time to manage the system. You also need someone in your team who is skilled in managing courses and setting them up in a logical way. The last thing you want is for your LMS to be the barrier to learning.

  1. Provide your team with the training they need to thrive

Your team can do really clever things with their LMS, but only if they know how to use it. Check out if your LMS supplier and platform solution offer training. And if they do, do it.  Totara Learn, for example, has their Totara Academy. It’s a dedicated space which has free online courses and certifications, forums, and resources. At Kineo, we offer our clients training tailored to their unique solution and have a large, dedicated support team. It’s crucial your team knows not only how to use the system, but also how to handle any hiccups or challenges.

  1. Ensure data compliance

The handling of personal data is increasingly becoming a key concern. Though Totara 11 is designed to make it easier to be GDPR complaint, no solution guarantees compliance. That’s because it’s down to you, your team and company to be complaint. That means it’s about the people and processes you put in place. Make sure you consult a data privacy officer or someone within your IT department who is knowledgeable about the topic to put the right processes in place. Also look into an off-the-shelf GDPR elearning course for your team to ensure they know the laws and how to handle data. You can also grab a copy of Totara Learning’s ‘A guide to GDPR compliance and your LMS’ as a great starting point.

  1. Measure results

Calculating ROI should be an ongoing process. It can help your team get business buy-in and make your team feel valued. Most L&D teams want a stake at the table and to be consulted in what courses the business needs, rather than dictated to.  The best way to achieve that is to demonstrate your worth and expertise. So generate reports and gather evidence to highlight your team’s successes.

  1. Create a plan for the future

Give your team goals to work towards and map out a strategy for your team and system. You should create a roadmap for system updates to address the pain points your learners and team are experiencing. These plans will help give your team real purpose in their jobs and you’ll make them feel like they are making a difference in their company.

  1. Rally some champions for your team

To make everyone in your team’s job easier, find champions within the business who will be advocates of the system. Who are they you ask? Well typically you’ll want to find two types of people. The first are those who are forward thinkers and are early adopters of new technologies and better processes. These people are the obvious choices, but also look for your main opponents and work on turning them into advocates. These nay-sayers are the second types of people you need to get onboard because in truth, they will be your most powerful allies.
